KMS Coaches' Corner

You have almost certainly picked up some new logins, websites, organizational tools, and forms of communication over the past few months.  You have wikis to update, wikis to read, Google readers to read, RSS feeds, weebly to update, Diigo, facebook, blogs to read and blogs to post...  You have to remember which email you used to sign up for each of those, and how to get back to the site that sounded so cool in July. Feeling scattered?

You need to develop a system to deal with all of this, and create a routine that will keep it manageable.  I call that effort, that management of many tech pieces, your digital hygiene.  Like personal hygiene, it is something you will develop in a way that works for you.  Every task does not have to be done with identical frequency.  Some require daily attention.  Some can be allowed to slip to an "occasional" status.  Some tasks deserve a weekly look.  Some are more fun than others!  (C'mon, who really enjoys flossing?)

There are organizational strategies and tools to help us maintain our digital hygiene.

My favorite so far is Diigo.  Yes, it's part of the load of new things that we've learned, but it is a place to corral all the websites that keep coming our way.  I have gotten in the habit of adding sites by clicking on the "Bookmark" button on the Diigo toolbar.  Now I have to get better about routinely organizing and tagging the sites.

Do you have a trick or a tool to help manage your digital hygiene?  Or a frustration?  Please share it with us!

I am having some trouble downloading YouTube videos so that I can use them during school. I need to do this due to bandwidth and that the kids don't need to see the other videos that are "related" to the one that I have pulled up. If anyone can help with an easy way to do this please let me know! Thanks...

Joey,
There is a way to embed a linked YouTube video into a PowerPoint presentation. It still requires linking to the video via Internet. However, it isolates the video and eliminates the rest of the YouTube page and related videos. I will show you how to do that, and I will post instructions.

Downloading is another issue, and I think it is not legal... Will check with the others.

Debby,
Can you please also show me how to embed YouTube or TeacherTube? Or..jut post directions.

It's hard for me to remember to do everything...check email, announcements, update weebly, update calendar, etc. I am finding that if I do it all in the evening *updates* or at the end of school it works better!

I'm still hammering out the details of a schedule that works for me. It probably will evolve in response to my life's changing schedule. I check my two main emails and AIM before I go to work, try to keep an eye on school email during the day, and then in the afternoon check blogs and readers and social network sites. In the evening I update posts and play with new technologies.

Erica,

I have posted on the Media page of this website the steps to embed a YouTube video in Powerpoint. I had to be very brief in the entry; there is no room for elaboration! If you are comfortable trying it, go for it! If it doesn't look like it makes sense, let me know and I'll show you.

On the topic of keeping it clean, organized, and free from left over chicken... When I am at home, I use a google desktop. This pops up whenever I sign on to the net. I have added widgets there that interest me, and I have created some just for me that have links to sites I use a lot. If we had the OK to do this on our school laptops, we could make widgets for our mail, wikis, weeblies, and other things. Then we would have an automatic reminder everytime we connected to the web. I would also be interested in putting twitter on my school comp. if possible. This could serve as a less involved way for teachers and coaches to exchange quick ideas, tips, or questions.

I, too, use iGoogle as my home page. I have added an RSS feed item on the page that shows me when a new blog post is added to this website.
