Now that you have your CPS student response system, how do you use it for authentic, formative assessment? What have you found to be a strength of the new system? How do you take advantage of the capability of text responses?

I LOVE the fact that CPS has short answer options. I'm using it with my focus a lot in addition to quizzes. What I do with my focus is I have pictures scrolling on a powerpoint presentation that represent our vocabulary words. The students type in the word that goes with that picture. I also like having them type in the answers to their homework as they enter the room. Yah for text answers!

CPS does offer you to type longer questions and more text in the possible answer spaces. A tip though is that at times it takes a while for the answers to generate, so I suggest having something kids can quietly and independently work on at their desk.

I have only used them so far as the "fast paced lesson". Which is I have them enter test answers, homeworks etc. It is great for tests b/c it takes about 10 minutes to go through 80 tests. I'm still figuring out a lot of the nics and nacs to it. (i.e. which reports are good for what info we want) If you come across any specific questions or wants out of them, feel free to let me know(email). I talk online with Mike Fisher quite a bit and he's great at getting quick responses. Also it will give him more info on what to discuss when he comes back.

Has anyone experimented with attaching remotes to specific desks, then assigning remotes by desk? Thinking this might be good if you have a stable seating assignment, bad if you don't.

I have used the systems for three things- a test, a focus and homework. On the test it did not work all that well becuase they had to spell the words correct or it would mark it wrong and it was their first time. The focus was awesome- they watched a power point of pictures cycle through and wrote down which vocabulary word would be associated with each picture in their daybook. Then they texted the answers in. I was able to show them what they had right and wrong and we worked on fixing errors. Today we entered their homework in the CPS as their focus. This worked the best yet. They enjoyed being able to see their score immediately. I have found that with texting, it works best if they already have the answers written down. Also, if you want them to text you need to make sure that the top of the CPS reads "123ABC". Any questions let me know :-)

Re: misspellings of words in CPS. I thought someone told me that they let kids enter words, wrote down any misspellings and then entered those as alternative correct answers. Then they quickly "rescored" the assignment, and it counted the misspellings correct. Who did this? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I was very excited when I first started using my CPS clickers. The response times were almost immediate and the color feedback was quite helpful. Students were excited and totally engaged in their work. However, all of a sudden, on the day I was using them to give a test, they completely STOPPED working. I have contacted the folks at CPS, as directed, and informed our technology folks, and I have tried troubleshooting over and over;no results yet.
